Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Marine Police Division Requires The Following For Boat Registration:
An Individual:
- Bill of Sale
- Current Boat Registration from Previous Owner if Purchased Out of State or Title
- Current Driver’s License or ID
NOTE: Bill of Sale must include, Hull Number, Year, Make, Model, Length, AL #’s, Make of Motor, HP of Motor and Motor Serial Number.
CHAIN OF OWNERSHIP MUST BE PROVIDED IF VESSEL WAS NOT PURCHASED FROM REGISTERED OWNER
Beginning January 1st, 2024 certain vessels constructed after December 31,2023 will be required to be titled.
What is required to be titled:
- Alabama is the state of principal use
- Any vessel between the length of 18 feet and 26 feet
- Vessels less than 18 feet in length with more than 75 horsepower
What is excluded:
- Sailboats
- Paddleboats
- Rowboats
- Documented vessel
- Barge
- Foreign-documented vessel
- Vessel before delivery
- Vessel held by a dealer for sale or lease
- A vessel constructed before December 31, 2023
Optional vessels to be titled:
- Vessel more than 26 feet in length regardless of year constructed
- Alabama is the state of principal use
Paperwork accepted as proof of ownership
- A certificate of title signed by the owner shown on the certificate and which identifies the applicant as the owner of the vessel or is accompanied by a record that identifies the applicant as the owner
- If there is no certificate of title, the following are accepted:
- If the vessel was a documented vessel, a record issued by the United States Coast Guard which shows the vessel is no longer a documented vessel and identifies the applicant as the owner
- If the vessel was a foreign-documented vessel, a record issued by the foreign country which shows the vessel is no longer a foreign-documented vessel and identifies the applicant as the owner
- If there is no certificate of title, the following are accepted:
- In all other cases, a certificate of origin, bill of sale, or other record that to the satisfaction of the office identifies the applicant as owner
